David Pinto-Duschinsky’s 15-vote win in Hendon was the closest contest in the UK general election.

The Labour candidate defeated Conservative Ameet Jogia by 15,855 votes to 15,840 in a result finally announced just before 9am following a recount.

Pinto-Dushinsky’s majority was three votes smaller than the margin of victory for Labour’s Neil Duncan-Jordan, who beat Conservative Robert Syms by 18 votes in Poole.

Unusually compared to the national picture, the narrow Labour win in Hendon was in contrast to predictions of a more comfortable victory for the party in both pre-election polls and Thursday’s exit poll, however it did accord with local predictions from both Labour and Conservatives that the seat would produce the borough’s tightest result.
