Ed Patrick brought his Catch Your Breath tour to artsdepot in North Finchley last month becoming the latest comedian to find laughter in a career in the NHS.

Patrick studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen before becoming an anaesthetist. The show, based on a book subtitled the Secret Life of a Sleepless Anaesthetist, draws on his career in the NHS, which he has combined with appearances on Channel 4’s Have I Got News For You and hosting Comedians Surgery podcast where he speaks to guests including Joe Lycett.

The artsdepot show, the second date of the tour, featured support from Chelsea Birkby, who confidently warmed up the audience with her hilariously self-aware material on themes including dating, freshers’ week and sex.

Patrick packed a comic punch with his smooth transition from jokes about the local area – including his Google-search of “Finchley” – and artsdepot itself to politics, before alighting on his main theme of the NHS.

In an engaging and relatable performance, Patrick compared some of the awkward situations he’s seen as an anaesthetist with everyday scenarios, in one instance leading to some crude innuendo using his mic as a prop.

The combination of slow-motion mime and mortified facial expressions enabled the audience to share the experience of sheer embarrassment he had felt during the situation he was recreating.

Overall, Catch Your Breath is full of anecdotes that form a cohesive narrative about Patrick’s life and the (often) hilarious unanswered questions about how the world of medicine works before ending with a wholesome twist.
