Chipping Barnet MP Dan Tomlinson has focused on improving public services as part of a “deal for suburbia” in his maiden speech in the House of Commons yesterday.

Tomlinson, who became the first ever Labour MP for the constituency when he defeated Conservative incumbent Theresa Villiers at the general election in July, used the speech to explain that residents of suburban constituencies like his work hard and “expect in return that the government will just get some things right by providing public services that are there when needed”.

He paid tribute to Villiers, who he said had: “served with much hard work and diligence over her 19 years of service”, adding that she was “a hard-working Member of Parliament, and I hope to follow in her footsteps in that regard”.

Tomlinson rounded off his contribution with a quick fire naming of areas of the constituency including “the many Barnets” before pledging to “do all I can for our communities during my time in this place”.

In recent weeks, the MP has championed the cause of the Builders Arms pub as it faces problems caused by nearby construction work and has also launched a competition to design his first constituency Christmas card.
