Communities in Finchley came together to reject racism last night with a major counter-protest against a planned far-right demonstration but the local MP hit out at an antisemitic leaflet published by one of group’s involved.

Hundreds of local people took to the streets in response to the planned far-right at a location in North Finchley, however Finchley and Golders Green MP Sarah Sackman hit out at a promotional leaflet from the group ‘Finchley Against Facism’ which called for ‘Zionists’ to get out of Finchley.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, the MP said: “Concerned residents have shared posts with my office relating to so called “anti-fascist” groups in Finchley which are clearly antisemitic. I will not amplify or platform those voices. Instead I have reported them to the police and CST. I advise others to do the same.”

She added: “I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Whether it’s the far right or far left there can be zero tolerance for antisemitism, Islamophobia or racism in any form. There is no place for such hate in our community.”

The protest in North Finchley was one of several in London last night, including a major anti-racist protest in Walthamstow.

The Mayor of London praised both police and anti-racism protesters following the events across the capital. Sadiq Khan said: “I would like to pay tribute to the outstanding work of our police officers across London last night.

“And to those who came out peacefully to show London stands united against racism and Islamaphobia last night – thank you.

“We have seen appalling violence and disorder in towns and cities across the country in recent days, but there was no repeat in our capital overnight.”

He added: ““I’m clear that there is no place for violence, racism, Islamophobia and antisemitism in our city and we will never let those who seek to divide our communities to win.

“London is proud of our diversity and of being and open and welcoming city, and always will be.”
