The quilt, created in support of the United for Warm Homes campaign, was on show at Barnet day of action

Barnet community members used cloth and stitches to call for warmer bricks and mortar in an appeal for government action to make warm homes affordable and ecologically sound.
The community quilt was on show at an event on November 16th organised by local group Eco Show and Tell. In the lead-up to the day of action, people took part in a community crafting session, where they co-created a striking patchwork quilt to symbolise the pressing need to deliver on warm homes in Barnet.
The event saw a number of local organisations and people adding their support to calls for the rapid roll-out of home insulation in Barnet, and an energy system powered by cheap renewables. The calls for action are central demands of the United for Warm Homes campaign launched by Friends of the Earth last year.
In Hendon alone, there are 29 fuel poverty hotspots – neighbourhoods where incomes are low but energy bills are higher than average – according to analysis by Friends of the Earth. The environmental justice organisation has created an interactive map which identifies fuel poverty hotspots across England and Wales.
There are an estimated 26,757 homes with poor insulation in Hendon – those with an energy performance rating of D or lower – making them inefficient and expensive to heat. By bringing the worst rated homes up to standard, prioritising action in the areas that need it most, households could save as much as £720 annually on their bills.

United for Warm Homes is a growing grassroots movement, powered by Friends of the Earth, to secure the national change that guarantees everyone benefits from a warm home that doesn’t cost the earth.
Ben Samuel from Barnet United for Warm Homes said: “We’re thrilled that so many people turned out last month to support the fight for warm homes in Barnet. It just goes to show how deeply people care about this issue, not least because it’s our neighbours and communities that are suffering.”
