Pupils at Parkfield Primary School in Hendon took part in a series of road safety classes and put their learning to the test on the pedestrian crossing just outside the school.

The classes were in advance of Road Safety Week, which is led by road safety charity Brake each year. They were delivered by Barnet Council’s Safe and Sustainable Travel Team in partnership with local housebuilder Barratt London.

In her educational talk, Road Safety Officer for Barnet Council Sharada Osman led a number of exciting games and quizzes including Street Detectives involving the children making keen observations of the road and its hazards. Speaking of the classes Osman said: “Raising awareness in a fun and creative way whilst educating the children on key road safety issues is a brilliant way to encourage the next generation to be more aware of their surroundings. I loved seeing the pupils getting involved and showing off their creativity. It was a great success and a great way to mark ‘Road Safety Week’.”

Leila Harris, a teacher at Parkfield Primary said: “We must work together to strive towards a safer environment for our young people, and part of this means inspiring the next generation to actively engage with road safety and learn about its importance to our lives. As a result of this activity, I am confident we have a few budding road safety officers which is fantastic, and we look forward to seeing a safer community and especially a community that enjoys walking.”

Barratt Homes also gifted the children reflective accessories to use when travelling to and from school. Joe Antoniazzi, Head of Sales at Barratt West London, commented: “Safe communities are extremely important, we make every effort to ensure the outdoor space at our developments is as safe and hazard-free as our homes. It was great to see young members of our community get involved and be inspired by Sharada. We hope they make use of their new hi-vis accessories to ensure our young people are safe and seen when walking to and from school.”

Road Safety Week takes place from 19th-25th November.
