The Labour Party selected its candidate for the Finchley and Golders Green constituency for the 2024 election at a selection meeting on Sunday.

Sarah Sackman, a barrister at Matrix Chambers, previously fought the seat in 2015, when she lost to current Conservative MP Mike Freer but increased Labour’s share of the vote by 6%.

The incumbent has seen a significant drop in his share of the vote over the past two elections (in 2017 and 2019) however he won an increased majority in 2019 due to a major split in the opposition vote between Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

At that election, Labour’s Ross Houston was pushed into third place as former Labour MP, Luciana Berger, came second for the Lib Dems – with the unpopularity of then Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn with the Jewish community being seen to have an impact.

However, Labour won 6 of the 10 wards in the constituency in its victory at this year’s local elections and seems likely to have a strong chance of taking the seat in 2024.

Barnet Post understands that Sarah Sackman received 299 votes from local party members, while her opponent East Finchley councillor Arjun Mittra received 112.

Responding to the result on Twitter, the selected candidate said: “Thank you so much Finchley & Golders Green! The hard work to win here starts today. I’m determined to turn this seat red! Together, we can win here!”
