TfL says the upgrade at the Northern Line stop will be completed by ‘winter 27/28’ with the station remaining open for the vast majority of the time that work is carried out reports David Floyd

Barnet Labour politicians are celebrating the announcement that work on step-free access at Burnt Oak Station will go ahead this summer.
The party’s councillors for Burnt Oak ward praised the role of their fellow councillor and GLA member Anne Clarke in getting the go ahead for the upgrades to the Northern Line station, which will include a new lift and footbridge.
A TfL spokesperson told Barnet Post: “Making more Tube stations step-free is a major part of our work to make the transport network more accessible.
“Work will start at Burnt Oak Tube station later this summer to make the station step-free, following the completion of the scheme’s detailed design. The upgraded station will see a new elevated walkway and footbridge, with a new lift providing step-free access between the island platform and street level. We expect to complete the works by winter 2027/28.”
TfL say that the station will remain open for the majority of the works but will close for two weeks this Autumn while the work to create an opening for the lift takes place.
Burnt Oak Labour councillors Sara Conway, Charlotte Daus and Kamal Gurung said: “It has been great working with our Labour GLA member for Barnet and Camden Anne Clarke and our Labour mayor Sir Sadiq Khan to secure these changes for Burnt Oak. No one should be barred from our transport system due to disability, and these changes will make the station far more accessible.
“After many meetings and continued collaboration between ward councillors, TfL officers, the London Assembly Member, and Barnet Council representatives, this project will now go ahead.
“This is a significant achievement that will make Burnt Oak Station more accessible for everyone, particularly disabled passengers, older people, parents with pushchairs, and anyone with mobility needs.”
Clarke, who is also a Labour councillor for Cricklewood ward said: “Labour in London is leading a revolution in transport accessibility, with now more than a third of the Tube network and over half of London Overground stations now accessible.
“We will continue to push for improvements throughout the borough, including making Totteridge and Whetstone station step-free.”
