Construction begins on flood alleviation scheme

Barnet Council says the scheme at Lyndhurst Park and The Meads Open Space will tackle climate change and reduce the threat to homes

Barnet Council begins work this month on a flood alleviation scheme that it says will both tackle climate change and reduce the threat to homes and infrastructure.

The scheme at Lyndhurst Park and The Meads Open Space includes adjusting the slopes of Burnt Oak Brook, digging new flood basins and planting new trees.

It follows previous flood alleviation schemes the council has introduced at Watling Park in Burnt Oak, Friary Park in Friern Barnet and Halliwick Park in Muswell Hill.

Alan Schneiderman, the council’s cabinet member for environment and climate change, said: “This will help address the increasing risk posed by climate change. While reducing the risk of flooding, it will also provide a more biodiverse and picturesque amenity space for residents to enjoy throughout the year.”

He added: “We’re working together as a borough to become more sustainable and make Barnet net zero by 2042 – and this is another step we’re making in the right direction.”

The work is funded by the Department for Environment as part of the Action for Silk Stream project.
