Barry Rawlings was responding to news of US-Israeli attacks which resulted in the death of the Supreme Leader of Iran followed by retaliatory attacks on Israel

Barnet Council’s leader has expressed ‘sympathy and support’ for Barnet residents affected by military action in the Middle East.
Barry Rawlings made a statement today following attacks on Iran by the US and Israel, which started at the weekend and were followed by Iranian attacks on Israel.
The attacks on Iran resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday, prompting celebrations in the streets of Finchley by members of the borough’s Iranian community.
Cllr Rawlings said: “Barnet has London’s largest Iranian and Jewish populations.
“With the recent escalation of events in Iran and across the wider Middle East, we recognise that many residents in our borough are feeling understandably heightened emotions. We know that members of our community have family, friends, and loved ones directly affected, and we want to express our deepest sympathy and support during this uncertain time.”
He added: “We also acknowledge the hope many hold for a democratic future for Iran. In recent days, we have seen residents take to the streets to express their views. As a council, we stand in solidarity with all who choose to exercise their democratic rights peacefully and respectfully.
“Our borough’s strength lies in its diversity, its cohesion, and the care our communities show for one another. We remain committed to working closely with community leaders, faith groups, and local organisations to offer reassurance, listen to concerns, and ensure that everyone feels safe and supported.”
Many members of the borough’s large Iranian community welcomed news of the death of Khamenei, who had led Iran’s Islamic revolutionary regime since 1989. Celebrations on Ballards Lane in Finchley Central began on Saturday evening and continued into the early hours of Sunday morning.
