Finchley’s Iranian residents were celebrating in the streets last night following the death of the country’s leader.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had been Supreme Leader of Iran’s Islamic revolutionary regime since 1989, was killed yesterday as part of a US-Israeli attack on the country.

Finchley is home to one of the largest Iranian communities in the UK and, in recent years, has been affectionately dubbed Little Tehran.

The celebrations marking the end of Khamenei’s rule in Ballards Lane began last night and continued in the early hours of this morning with large numbers gathering and many bearing Iranian flags from the period preceding the Islamic regime, which took power in 1979.

US-Israeli bombing attacks on Iran are currently ongoing.
