If approved the scheme would cover around 14% of Barnet roads and see companies responsible for roadworks charged up to £2,500 per day, reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter

Firms carrying out roadworks in Barnet could be charged up to £2,500 per day in an attempt to “reduce delays for residents and businesses”.
The proposal by Barnet Council to introduce fees for full and partial road closures in traffic hotspots is aimed at ensuring roadworks are completed “at the least disruptive time for road users” and completed faster.
The council has said charges under the scheme will apply to “specified locations” on “specified days and times” and within “traffic sensitive times”.
If approved the scheme would cover around 14% of Barnet roads, which is “comparable with other outer London boroughs”.
The scheme, called lane rental, has been introduced in Hammersmith & Fulham while neighbouring borough Enfield is proposing implementation.
A London-wide permit scheme, which charges £240 for major roadworks and £65 for minor works, operates across all roads in the borough.
The council has highlighted that only 14% of roads will have these new “enhanced” fees if the scheme is approved, while the “majority” of the network would be “unaffected”.
The consultation on the new charges will run until Tuesday, 9th September.
If the council proceeds with an application, which must go to Department for Transport for approval, it must be made by 30th September in order to bring the scheme into effect by April 2026.
