Leïla Davaud on this year’s biggest ever Battle of Barnet reenactment

After a year’s hiatus due to last spring’s wet weather, the Barnet Medieval Festival is back on 7th and 8th June in a stunning new location at Lewis of London.
This edition is shaping up to be the biggest yet, with over 400 volunteers behind the scenes at the new venue. This year’s festival promises to be a spectacular way to remember the Battle of Barnet, fought nearly 555 years ago. It marks an exciting new chapter for the event, which began in 2017 with a few tents behind the Barnet Museum.
The festival’s director, Susan Skedd, told Barnet Post: “This new site allows us to deliver something truly grand and magical. The turnout of re-enactors is just fantastic, people have travelled from far and wide to be here.”
Last year’s cancellation was a real blow for these enthusiasts and they are thrilled to make this weekend particularly special: “Around 300 re-enactors and traders are joining us. The public will be able to witness the re-enactment of the historical battle, meet knights, archers, and medieval artists”, explains Susan.
A large range of activities will allow families to imagine what Barnet looked like during medieval times with the brand-new ‘knight school’, where children can take part in a 30 minute interactive course learning the drills and discipline, and hearing stories of what it meant to be a knight. Susan adds: “If you are more interested in crafting, you can participate in quick courses such as pottery, armour making, and needlework.”
And if you’ve ever wanted to don a tunic or swing a foam sword, now’s your chance. Whether you’re seven or 70, visitors are encouraged to come dressed in medieval costume and fully participate in the festivities. Volunteers will be cooking over open fires, while you will be able to dance to live music. And yes, there will be a medieval beer tent for those seeking some timeless brew.
For two days, history is truly brought to life. “The Battle of Barnet, wasn’t chosen by the town in 1471 but it remains one of the most significant events in its history. Understanding this battle helps us understand who we are,” says Susan. “We’re so far removed from that way of life, there’s something powerful about reconnecting with it.”
One major improvement this year is the introduction of a shuttle bus, running every 15 minutes from the back of The Spires shopping centre to the festival site, making it easier than ever to reach the event. With rising costs, organisers are asking adults and teenagers to pay an entrance fee, helping to ensure the future of this remarkable community event.
“We’re not a commercial enterprise, just a team of passionate people trying to keep this history alive.”
Whether you’re a history buff, a curious family, or just looking for a unique weekend experience, the Barnet Medieval Festival should be on your calendar.
