The MP for Chipping Barnet met Post Office representatives last week as he continues the fight to save the local branch.

Dan Tomlinson had discussions with the Post Office’s national team along with the manager of the Barnet High Street branch to make the case that plans to close the branch announced in November should be dropped.

Branches in Golders Green and Cricklewood are also among the 115 local post offices earmarked for potential closure, provoking strong opposition from local politicians.

Following the meeting, Tomlinson said: “The conversation with the Post Office was productive, but the work does not stop here. I have made it clear that we must keep a substantial Post Office presence on Barnet High Street for the needs of our communities and our local economy.

“I will continue to fight for Barnet Post Office and a fair deal for staff.”

Tomlinson is urging residents to sign the ’Save Barnet Post Office’ petition to show their support.

When announcing the original plans in November, a Post Office spokesperson said:“We are considering a range of options to reduce our central costs. This includes considering the future of our remaining directly managed branches (DMBs), which are loss-making.

“We have had long held a publicly-stated ambition to move to a fully franchised network and we are in dialogue with the unions about future options for the DMBs.”
