Gateshead 2 Barnet 0

Barnet’s indifferent start to the season continued with another loss, their third on the road out of four. The latest defeat was a 2-0 reverse against leaders Gateshead, who over the last few seasons have started to become a bit of a bogey team for the Bees.

The Bees, buoyed by last weekend’s 7-0 home thumping of Tamworth, always knew this game would be tougher and so it proved with goals scored in the early parts of each half enough consigning the Bees to defeat.

The opener arrived on six minutes through Callum Whelan, who scored after keeper Nick Hayes parried the ball out to him from an initial shot.

Soon after, home keeper Harry Moss pulled off what Bees’ manager Dean Brennan described in his post-match chat as an ‘unbelievable’ save to prevent Joe Kizzi from levelling.

With five minutes of the second half played, the Head had their second goal of the afternoon when Adom placed the ball past Hayes.

The Bees thereafter had a few opportunities to strike back, but the Head defence stood firm to pick up the 3 points and continue their unbeaten start to the season.

As for the Bees, with only seven games played, three losses already, five points behind top spot and presently short of options up front due to injuries to star man Nicke Kabamba & summer signing Rhys Browne, they can’t afford to drop more points. With successive home games coming up against Altrincham & Braintree, a return of six points is vital.
