Residents invited to comment on 22-storey Brent Cross hotel plans

The scheme has been submitted to Brent Council but Barnet residents are able to comment because of its proximity to the borough, reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter

Barnet residents have been invited to comment on plans for a new hotel in Brent Cross.

An application for a 22-storey building comprising a new hotel and commercial space at 403-405 Edgware Road has been submitted to Brent Council.

Although just on the Brent side of the borough boundary, Barnet residents are invited to comment as the scheme will have a significant local impact.

Plans for the site, which neighbours Chinese supermarket chain Wing Yip, recognisable due to its large pagoda, have undergone revisions and significant delays over the years due to construction cost inflation.

Applicant AMAFHH Investments Ltd has proposed demolishing the existing building which is “so close to the end of its life” and has experienced “long established flood damage in the basements”.

The building was constructed between 1937 and 1939 for the armed forces, with bomb-proofed basements, but was never used for its intended purpose and remained a “stand-by structure”.

Consequently the building has had a variety of uses including retail and office.

Alongside the new hotel, which will include an ancillary gym, spa and swimming pool, the building will also have employment space, a conference centre, a community hall, and a basement car-park.

The development lies within the ‘Staples Growth Area’, an area Brent has identified for regeneration, close to the newly-opened Brent Cross West Station.
