Barnet Council is to lead on renewable power across the London boroughs, aiming to secure 100% renewable energy for the public sector.

Barnet will work closely with the other London boroughs to help councils buy affordable renewable energy by developing a potential model for collective power purchase agreements. It is hoped that this can be used by groups of boroughs to buy energy more cheaply and will support the decarbonisation of the grid, as well as reducing costs and enabling boroughs to reach their own net zero goals.

The ‘Renewable Power for London’ theme forms part of London Councils’ Climate Programme, established to support collaborative delivery of climate solutions across the capital.

Alongside this, Renewable Power for London is working closely with the Greater London Assembly to develop widespread Local Area Energy Planning and enable the development of heat networks to provide cost effective decarbonised heating for homes and businesses. The programme will also look at how best to strengthen energy advice services, to help the city’s residents save energy.

Barnet’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, Cllr Alan Schneiderman, said: “We have made good progress in the 18 months since we launched our campaign to become a Net Zero council by 2030 and borough by 2042.

“However, we can’t solve the climate crisis alone. We are delighted to be leading on renewable power for all London boroughs, working with London Councils and the GLA to help decarbonise our electricity and heat and achieve London’s Net Zero ambitions.”
