A consultation on a major redevelopment scheme has been extended – and residents are now able to attend in-person drop-in sessions on the plans.

The consultation on the Hendon Hub development in The Burroughs, Hendon, will now run until Friday 4th June.

It means residents have an extra two weeks to give their views on the Barnet Council-led scheme, which is designed to provide 792 student homes and improved facilities in an area around Middlesex University.

With the lifting of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, outdoor drop-in events are being held this week at the Scholars’ Courtyard marquee at Middlesex University.

These events are due to take place today (Tuesday) 18th May, 4pm – 7pm; Thursday 20th May, 10am–1pm; and Friday 21st May, 2pm–5pm. There will be a further virtual presentation on the plans at 6pm on Thursday.

Following government advice, people are expected to have taken a Covid-19 lateral flow test and received a negative result within 72 hours prior to attending campus. Anyone showing symptoms of the virus or from the same household as someone displaying symptoms has been asked not to attend, along with those who have been asked to self-isolate.

Council leader Dan Thomas said the Hendon Hub scheme would replace “rundown buildings” in The Burroughs and Church End with “modern, attractive buildings and public spaces”.

But some residents have criticised the plans, warning they would change the character of the area while questioning the supposed benefits for the community.

An online petition urging Barnet Council to ditch plans to move a library out of its historical home as part of the redevelopment has been signed by more than 1,300 people.
