A new home: celebrating the Year of the Tiger in EdgwareRecently arrived Hong Kong migrants are welcomed by the mayor of Barnet
Recently arrived Hong Kong migrants celebrated the Year of the Tiger in Edgware this January.
In an effort to create cross-cultural connections, the social enterprise Umbrella Formation (UF) organized a bring a dish party on Sunday 30th January (the day before Lunar New Year’s Eve) for Hongkongers who recently settled in Barnet and long term Barnet residents. Hong Kongers were welcomed by the Mayor of Barnet and local councillors.
The event gave newly arrived people an opportunity to enjoy the traditional festive season and share homemade food with UK locals.
Everyone had a great time, whether it was to enjoy the live music by Hong Kong musicians or, jotting down new year blessings on Lennon Wall. Other activities included noting the fortunes of the twelve zodiacs, photo opportunities with Lunar New Year’s props and a “Fai Chun” writing and ink painting workshop.
There was also a tea master who offered much missed Hong Kong-style milk tea. Whilst homestyle Hong Kong cooking in the form of slow-cooked chicken fish maw soup was available for everyone to taste.
We were honoured with the attendance of the Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet, Alison Cornelius, Councilor Richard Cornelius and Councilor Nick Mearing-Smith. Mayor Alison welcomed Hongkongers in her speech and conducted conversations with participants in the room.
It was a great opportunity to a platform for Hongkongers to integrate with locals, which is one of the missions of UF. Some of the participants are newcomers to London having arrived in London just a few months ago. These newly arrived people said it was a great chance to interact with locals, hopefully there will be more events like this in the future.
Umbrella Formation (UF) has been registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC) in 2021. UF aims to support the integration of Hong Kong migrants in London, preserve culture and contribute back to the local community in London.
