Become a patron of Barnet Post and help support independent local news

Barnet Post is looking for a small number of local patrons who believe in local news for Barnet as much as we do.

A spread of Barnet Post newspapers

Local news is too important to be behind a paywall, sent out in private newsletters or locked into a model where circulation dwindles month on month.  Local news needs to get in front of people to inform, to stimulate and to entertain.

Barnet Post prints and distributes across the borough 15,000 copies of the paper each month.  These copies are available for free from supermarkets and libraries.

Barnet Post also publishes new stories every day at the Barnet Post website.

Patrons are people or organisations who can contribute £500 or more to securing the Post’s long-term sustainability and help us to negotiate the unpredictable landscape for local news – as we respond to changes in the advertising market and the sometimes inexplicable behaviour of key players including local councils and big tech platforms. It will give us the space to focus on journalism rather than complicated financial management.

Barnet Post was founded in February 2021.  Initially an online publication, we published  eight issues in print between July 2021 and February 2022 before returning to being online only again. With a small amount of funding from the Civic Futures Fund we returned to print in December 2023.

How is Barnet Post funded?

Barnet Post is published by Social Spider CIC, a small social enterprise.  Under the banner of Social Spider Community News, our small team publishes five titles: Waltham Forest Echo, Enfield Dispatch, Newham Voices, Haringey Community Press and Barnet Post.

All of our titles are funded through a combination of print and online advertising revenue, regular and one-off support from our readers and other forms of payment for publishing news such as Google News Showcase.

Barnet Post is not funded by Barnet Council or by any other local or national government body.

As of July 2024, our largest source of income is print advertising.

How much news does Barnet Post publish?

Barnet Post published 608 news stories in the first quarter of 2024 and 620 news stories in the second quarter of 2024 up to the end of June.  109 of these stories were in print and 1019 of them appeared online.  This is an average of 205 stories per month, or approximately 46 stories per week.

How many copies of Barnet Post are printed and distributed?

Each month, Barnet Post prints and distributes 15,000 copies of the newspaper across Barnet.  These newspapers are free to pick up from a range of venues in the borough.

How many people work on Barnet Post?

Barnet Post currently has no full-time staff.  Editor David Floyd works part time on Barnet Post.  Designer Jonathan Duncan designs Barnet Post as well as our other titles.  Our commercial team of Klaudia Kiss and Maia Wolf work across all five of our titles.

Why is Barnet Post free?

The easiest and most simple way of getting public interest news into the hands of the community so that news reporting can have an impact is to distribute it for free.  We want people to read the news we publish.
