Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers will succeed Rabbi Mark Goldsmith in the leadership role at Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue next year

An Edgware synagogue has appointed a new Senior Rabbi to lead its congregation from next year.
Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers take over from Rabbi Mark Goldsmith at Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue (EHRS) in Stonegrove on 1st May 2027.
Rabbi Debbie is already part of the clergy team at the synagogue. She first served at EHRS, which is the largest synagogue in the Movement for Progressive Judaism, as a student rabbi in 2007–08 before returning in April 2020.
Explaining the decision, EHRS Chair Joanna Sigalov said: “Rabbi Debbie is the perfect choice for EHRS. She is deeply respected and loved by members of every generation, and we are delighted that she will lead us into our next chapter. What makes this appointment particularly special is that we already know the person we are entrusting with our future.”
Talking about her appointment, Rabbi Debbie said: “Rabbi Debbie said: “After nearly seven years at EHRS as part of the clergy team, working to nurture and grow the community – from our tots’ services through to essential community care offerings for all, and so much in between – I feel incredibly excited and honoured to be working with our wonderful professional team and lay leaders to continue to shape EHRS, help her flourish and make Judaism meaningful in a constantly evolving world.”
