New Barnet Allotment Society is welcoming everyone to spend a relaxed afternoon surrounded by nature at its annual open day on Sunday, 23rd August. All proceeds and donations from the event will support the Chipping Barnet Foodbank.

From midday, visitors can enjoy a lively programme with a barbecue, teas and plenty of homemade cakes! Fresh produce from the allotments will be available to buy, alongside homemade jams and art.

One of the highlights of the day will be traditional apple pressing, while a tombola will make some lucky visitors very happy.

Painting, learning or playing games, children will also have plenty to enjoy with activities to keep them entertained throughout the afternoon. Adding to the atmosphere, live music will be provided by the five-piece local band, Amy & The Bar Studs, promising to give the event a festive touch on top of its educational goal.

Helena Hunt, of the Open Day organising committee, said: “There’s something deeply satisfying about growing your own food. When more of us dig, plant and harvest locally, we create a greener, healthier and more connected community. The world really is better when we grow our own.”

The society particularly encourages families to come along. “Allotments are wonderful places for children,” Helena added. “They can learn where food comes from, spend time outdoors, and develop a lifelong love of nature and growing. It’s one of the best activities a family can share.

“New Barnet Allotment Society welcomes families, gardening enthusiasts and anyone interested in discovering more about local food growing and community allotments. If one wants to enjoy a nice day out with friends and neighbours, this event is perfect.”

These allotment plots have been in use since 1937. After almost ninety years, they remain an important hub for the community, something the Open Day continues to showcase.

“All donations and proceeds will go directly to the Chipping Barnet Foodbank, helping local families who are in need,” Helena said. “It will be a fun and vibrant community event. All are welcome to come along, enjoy the day, and support a great local cause.”

The event takes place from midday until 4pm and entrance is £1 for adults and free for children under 16.

The allotment is at Clifford Road, Herts EN5 5NY, opposite Tudor Park footgolf.
