St Mary-at Finchley, one of North London’s oldest parish churches, is thrilled to share some exciting news. We’ll be appearing on an upcoming episode of the beloved BBC Antiques Roadshow along with a remarkable piece of our church’s history — don’t miss this episode!

The programme will highlight an 18th-century sundial originally located in the churchyard of St Mary-at-Finchley — a historically significant piece not only due to its craftsmanship but also because it appears in a landscape painting by the celebrated British artist J.M.W. Turner.

“We’re delighted to be able to share a bit of Finchley’s history with a national audience.” said The Revd Philip Davison, Rector at St Mary’s. “It’s a reminder that even small, local things can have a wider significance.”

Filmed at Stephens House and Gardens, the episode includes a fascinating discussion about Turner, timekeeping and the enduring role of St Mary-at-Finchley in the community through the centuries. The sundial has long been a quiet landmark in the churchyard but its artistic and historical significance shone under the spotlight during filming.

Tune in to watch on BBC One on Sunday 26th October at 8pm. (Also available on BBC iPlayer after the broadcast).

Founded in the 12th century, St Mary-at-Finchley has stood at the heart of the community for over 800 years. This national spotlight not only celebrates a unique piece of history but also highlights the church’s ongoing role in preserving local heritage.
