The New Barnet Allotment committee is welcoming everyone to spend a relaxed afternoon surrounded by nature at their annual open day tomorrow.

All proceeds and donations from the event on Sunday 7th September will support the Chipping Barnet Food Bank.

If you’ve never visited the New Barnet Allotment plots before, this is the perfect opportunity. From midday, visitors can enjoy a lively programme with a barbecue, teas and, last but not least, plenty of homemade cakes! Fresh produce from the allotments will be available to buy, alongside homemade jams and art.

One of the highlights of the day will be traditional apple pressing, while a tombola will add an extra element of surprise.

“Members will be giving tours of the different plots and explain how they produce their vegetables and fruits,” explains Helena Hunt, a member of the allotment’s organising committee. “We believe it’s a good way to show locals that growing our own food is healthy but also  a lot of fun as it brings neighbours together.”

Painting, learning or playing games, children will also have plenty to enjoy with activities to keep them entertained throughout the afternoon.  Adding to the atmosphere, live music will be provided by the local duo Discovery as well as performers Suzanne and Peter, promising to give the event a festive touch.

The New Barnet allotment plots have been in use since 1937, explains committee chair Jenny Forbe. After almost ninety years, they remain an important hub for the community, something the Open Day continues to showcase.

Helena Hunt says “All donations and proceeds will go directly to the Chipping Barnet Food Bank, helping local families who are in need.It will be a fun and vibrant community event. All are welcome to come along, enjoy the day, and support a great local cause”.

The event takes place from midday until 4pm and entrance is £1 for adults and free for children under 16.

The allotment is at Clifford Road, Herts EN5 5NY, opposite Tudor Park footgolf.
