The new chargers were installed over a six-week period as part of Barnet Council’s partnership with EV specialists Char.gy reports Roshni Ray

300 on-street charge points for electric vehicles have been installed across the borough of Barnet in six weeks.
Barnet Council teamed up with EV company char.gy and PFI service provider Barnet Lighting Services Limited to rollout the charge points during June and July, increasing the total number now available in the borough to 1,500.
char.gy says that this expansion is part of the council’s wider plan to install up to 1,000 new lamp column EV charge points, bringing the borough’s total over 2000 once all the phases are complete. It supports the council’s path to become a Net Zero Borough by 2042, reducing local CO2 and air pollution.
The company claims that on-street chargers will help bring residential charging access to the 40% of households without garages. Overnight charges will also be made cost-effective as the chargers use Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) tariffs and reduced night tariffs.
John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, said: “Rolling out 300 charge points in just six weeks is a remarkable pace and reflects the strength of our partnership with Barnet Council. This is one of the fastest large-scale on-street EV deployments in the country, and it’s just the beginning. We’re proud to be delivering real momentum for EV adoption at scale, and in the communities that need it most.”
Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Barnet’s cabinet member for environmental and climate change said: “Installing 300 charge points in just six weeks shows how serious we and char.gy are about tackling climate change and making it easier for residents to go electric. By supporting the switch to electric vehicles, we’re also helping to improve air quality across Barnet, making our streets healthier and safer for everyone.”
