Silver Sunday 2024 is a chance for older people to connect, to enjoy and celebrate
Silver Sunday, the national day dedicated to celebrating the contributions of older people to society will take place on Sunday, 6th October 2024, with events occurring across Barnet in the weeks surrounding the day.
Run by Age UK and now in its 12th year, Silver Sunday encourages hundreds of free activities throughout October that are designed to help older people feel valued and also help to tackle loneliness and isolation by connecting older people with their communities.
Age UK Barnet will be holding its Silver Sunday celebration of ageing well at Middlesex University, The Burroughs, NW4 4BT. ‘Last year over 600 people came,’ says Age UK Barnet chief executive Helen Newman. ‘In fact, it was the biggest Silver Sunday event in the country.’
Attendees can expect musical and dance performances, talks, advice on making a will and probate, creative activities, health checks and a light lunch. The event will be joined by Age UK CEO Paul Farmer, The Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet Cllr Tony Vourou as well as other councillors and local MPs plus author Charlotte Osho and actress and comedian Andi Osho.
Helen Newman says: ‘Silver Sunday serves as a reminder that older generations are a vibrant and vital part of our communities. It’s also an opportunity to bring people together, whether it’s through trying new activities, making new friends, or simply connecting with those around them. Whether you’re a business, community group, or individual, there are countless ways to get involved and make a positive impact.’
There will also be a chance for over 55s to take part in free or low cost activities around the borough during Silver Week (6-13 October 2024). Check out Age UK Barnet’s guide to the week’s activities here.
