Catherine Lusted on resources available for local children and young people

September means a return to school, and for some, an exciting new journey starting primary school or moving to secondary school. For some children, this can also be a daunting prospect; a new school, new subjects, new friends and new teachers.

Libraries have a ‘Back to School’ booklist, available to help children for the new term.

Back to school also means the return of homework. Barnet’s libraries provide a range of books to support children’s study. Covering subjects from maths, space, plants, computing, art and design, languages, music, geography and history (including local history), your local library can help you find reliable and accurate information for homework. You can visit any library and choose books from the shelves or use the ‘Select and Collect’ service to order titles to collect from your local library.

A collection of online resources is also available to help with homework and research. Find out about thousands of subjects on Britannica or discover famous people on Who’s Who. All online resources are free to use with a Barnet Library card and PIN.

Libraries can help children find information too. Contact [email protected] with your homework query for suggested resources to help.

It’s free to join the library. Visit during staffed opening times to sign up or join online. Young people aged 14 and above can also sign up for self-service opening with a parent’s consent.
