A £3m programme of works to the road in Brunswick Park represents Barnet Council’s “biggest investment ever in a single carriageway,” reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter

Long-awaited reconstruction works on a residential road in Brunswick Park are set to begin at the end of July.

Phase one of the roadworks on Hampden Way will begin on Monday (29th) and will see the street closed between house numbers two and 39, at the end nearest to Osidge Lane.

Five phases are planned and each will see the carriageway closed for approximately eight to nine weeks. Local diversions will be in place via Waterfall Road, Brunswick Park Road, and Osidge Lane.

Following the completion of phase one, the road will be closed from house numbers 39 to 77, beginning around the end of September.

In total the works will cost the council £3million, representing “the biggest investment ever in a single carriageway,” according to the council’s website.

They are needed because the carriageway’s surface has broken up, a condition which has been exacerbated by water flow at surface and subsurface level as a consequence of the nearby Pymmes Brook.

However, the improvements are expected to prolong the life of the road “in excess of 25 years”.

Following a review in July 2022 a “full rebuild” of the carriageway and installation of a new drainage system was scheduled.

The benefits according to the council are a reduction in the likelihood of future damage, improved drainage, and a reduced risk of flooding.
