A Finchley councillor has welcomed Barnet Council’s decision to pilot a scheme to help provide safety to women and girls locally.

The ‘Safe Haven’ scheme involves businesses providing temporary refuge to people who need help in the evening and is “primarily aimed at women and girls to access support if feeling intimidated, threatened, harassed or unwell”.

The Finchley businesses participating in the pilot are My Caffe at 731 High Road, The Elephant Inn at 283 Ballards Lane, and The Bohemia 762 High Road.

West Finchley Labour councillor Danny Rich said: “Barnet is one of the safest boroughs in London. Even so, knowing there is somewhere you can pop in to make a call or find transport information, will be reassuring for many women, if they do feel threatened on a night out. Barnet Labour want to make sure that is provided.

“I am so pleased that this scheme is being piloted in West Finchley, and we thank My Caffe, The Elephant and The Bohemia for stepping forward.”
