The boss of London Fire Brigade has been awarded the King’s Fire Service Medal in the New Year’s Honours.

Commissioner Andy Roe was awarded the honour in recognition of his 22 years of service in the brigade. He first joined aged 27 in 2002 following a number of years as a British Army officer.

As the commissioner of one of the largest and busiest fire services worldwide, he has been responsible for leading a “wholescale transformation” of the brigade since 2020.This has included the introduction of new equipment, procedures and training following the tragedies of the Grenfell Tower fire and multiple terror attacks in London.

On receiving the award, Commissioner Andy Roe said: “It is an incredible honour to receive the King’s Fire Service Medal. It is my absolute privilege to lead London Fire Brigade and really, this award stands for the effort and public service of the many thousands of brigade staff who through one of the most challenging periods in our history, continue to put themselves in harm’s way everyday for London.

“I am very proud of them and what this medal represents.”
