Theresa Villiers has announced her support for Rishi Sunak in the race to become leader of The Conservative Party and the new prime minister.

The Chipping Barnet MP issued a statement today praising the leadership contender’s “credible and serious plan” to grow the economy. She also contrasted the former chancellor’s position with that of his leadership rival, Liz Truss, by referring to his plans to delay tax major cuts until the economy has recovered sufficiently from the Covid-19 pandemic.

She said: “I know that he wants to get our taxes down after they have been driven upwards by the worst health emergency for a hundred years. But he accepts that we need to do this in a way which does not stoke up inflation or lead to big increases in borrowing, because this could lead to higher household bills and higher mortgage rates.”

The result of the final round of voting by Conservative MPs last week was:

  • Rishi Sunak – 137

  • Liz Truss – 113

  • Penny Mordaunt – 105

As a result, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss now face a ballot of Conservative Party members, with the winner due to be announced on September 5th.

Theresa Villiers added: “Both the two candidates have impressive qualities and strengths, but Rishi is the one who is most likely to win a general election for the Conservatives. And he is the best person to get our country safely through the problems left us by the Covid emergency and the return of inflation to the global economy. That is why he has my backing.”
