Every London Underground station has an association with at least one famous person. People who were born there, lived nearby, worked there, or even just drank near. So I decided to draw caricatures of celebrities for all the tube stations. In part as a lockdown project to keep me sane, but also as a challenge, when there are 270 major stations on the London Underground.
I began, with Spice Girl Emma Bunton on the end of the Northern Line at High Barnet. Although, it was quite difficult finding ‘celebrities’ for many stations, so much so that the term became ever more loosely defined. Added to which, the ever-variable Wikipedia would often list the same celebrities under several different areas of London. Simon Le Bon, for instance, was very useful to me as he was listed under Northwood even though he was raised in Pinner. Unfortunately, that station was already devoted to fellow musician Elton John. Also, quite a few people could be associated with several places, such as Amy Winehouse, Charles Dickens and John Betjeman. Now, the spectre of revising the entire project raises its ugly head again.
Simon Ellinas is a professional cartoonist and caricaturist living in Barnet with work regularly published in the Daily Mail and other publications. He draws caricatures from photos for people to give as gifts.
