Barnet Council installs new CCTV cameras

The council says the 27 ‘re-deployable’ cameras will enhance community safety in the borough

Barnet Council is installing new CCTV cameras this month in a move that it says will enhance community safety and help to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour.

The 27 new ‘re-deployable’ are in addition to the 33 other such cameras already in place in the borough alongside “nearly 900” static ones.

The council says the cameras are monitored in real time from a “state-of-the-art” control room, accessible by council community safety officers and police teams, alongside two CCTV-equipped vans which “add to flexibility across the borough”.

The council says: “The 27 cameras are being placed around the borough in areas where the council has intelligence that a range of anti-social behaviour and crimes are taking place – from graffiti and fly-tipping, to shoplifting and drug dealing.

“The locations have been informed by a range of data sources and are allocated by priority need and to maximise impact.”

Celebrating the new installations, Sara Conway, the council’s cabinet member for community safety and cohesion, said: “I’m really pleased to see these cameras being installed – it’s the latest phase in our comprehensive and sustained plan to upgrade and expand CCTV across the borough which we started in 2022. CCTV is a really important part of making Barnet safer and our continued partnership working with the police is showing that high-quality CCTV imagery is helping catch more criminals and secure successful prosecutions.

Cllr Conway added: “Also, thanks to residents of the borough for all your reporting – we do listen to the reports you make about anti-social behaviour and enviro-crime like fly tipping, and we are continuing to take action to tackle these key issues and improve community safety in Barnet.”
