West Hendon Playing Fields is set to get a number of upgrades, reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter

Residents have one more day to have a say on proposals to improve West Hendon Playing Fields.
In July, Barnet Council’s cabinet agreed a phased approach of delivering the ‘West Hendon Playing Fields masterplan’ and approved the commencement of works for phase one.
This includes tennis court improvements, a play area and public realm upgrade, and improvements to footpaths and drainage systems.
The cabinet also approved the commencement of phase two, which consists of up to two 3G football pitches and associated facilities, but is subject to the securing of external funding from the Football Foundation. A planning application is expected in 2026.
The council is hoping to gather views on the proposed play area design, how one of the borough’s largest green spaces is used and what improvements resident’s would like to see.
The consultation closes at midnight tonight (Friday 31st).
In June 2021, Barnet approved an outline business case for the development of “an £18.8M strategic sports hub including a wider leisure and community offer” at the site. This followed consultation on a draft masterplan in 2019.
However, in November 2024 a “reduced budget was approved” by cabinet “following a review of the council’s capital programme”.
Now the project’s team are “looking at other external funding support for the work” and some of the project’s budget has “already been used for design and feasibility studies”.
The council confirmed further “target consultation” will be held on the play area’s design “before phase one works” take place.
