Barnet residents will soon have their food waste collected separately to other rubbish and recycling after the council’s cabinet approved plans for a new service.

Last week’s meeting backed plans to provide the service – which is already offered to local schools and businesses – to all households in the borough by the end of March 2026.

Food waste recycling is part of the council’s plan to become a net-zero borough by 2042.

Cllr Alan Schneiderman, cabinet member for environment and climate change, said: “This is great news as many residents are regularly asking when a separate food waste collection service will come back to Barnet. Not only will this service help residents to increase recycling, but this is an important contribution towards creating a more sustainable future for Barnet, and a step closer to achieving our net zero-carbon ambitions by 2042.”

The council said it would be communicating with all households nearer to the launch of the service.
