Hundreds of homes have already been approved for other parts of the former New Barnet Gasworks site, reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter
Plans for 200 homes to be built on the site of a disused gasholder in New Barnet have been announced.
Developer Berkeley Homes is set to bring forward plans to demolish the 90-year-old local landmark on the northern part of the former New Barnet Gasworks site in Albert Road.
Plans for 420 residential homes dubbed ‘Victoria Quarter’, submitted by developer Fairview, were approved for the southern part of the gasworks site in March.
An initial consultation is underway with an event held this month and an online survey available on Berkeley Homes’ website for residents to share their views.
The survey asks what type of housing residents think is “most required” in New Barnet, giving options between “traditional family” homes, three or four-storey low-rise apartments, and medium to high-rise apartments.
The survey asks whether the site in its current state offered a “positive contribution” and whether the principle of regenerating the “redundant brownfield” site for new homes was supportable.
The site is allocated in the forthcoming Barnet Local Plan for around 200 homes, assuming the development is apartment-led.
Once feedback is considered and an outline drawn up, Berkeley Homes aims to submit an application to Barnet Council next year.
Access to the site, and the main service route, would be via Albert Road where construction is currently underway on Fairview’s Park Quarter, which has delivered 44 homes, and Victoria Quarter which will deliver 420.
Local businesses on Albert Road have recently complained of the road’s use as a “pit lane” saying the construction traffic and storing of building materials is costing them trade.
A spokesperson from Berkeley Homes said the site’s allocation for housing in the Local Plan and the borough’s need for new homes made it ideal for redevelopment.
The spokesperson said: “We are excited to be bringing forward the redundant Albert Road gasworks for much needed new homes.
“This brownfield site is allocated for housing in the council’s Local Plan and we started to engage with the community in December to understand local views and priorities.
“We are delighted with the level of engagement and participation so far and will continue dialogue with the community and council in early 2025 ahead of a planning application later in the year.”
