Last weekend, Unitas Youth Zone opened its doors to over 420 visitors for a day of celebration, learning, and community spirit, marking Black History Month with events that truly offered something for everyone.

From young children to teens and parents alike, there was a palpable sense of family and belonging throughout the day. Attendees enjoyed a wide range of activities in a safe, vibrant environment designed to make everyone feel welcome.

Unitas’ commitment to creating a secure, enjoyable space was evident as families came together, young people explored exciting new experiences, and visitors had the chance to learn more about this invaluable community hub.

The day began with a free community event: ‘Celebrating Black History Month’ which featured live performances, local vendors, and interactive activities. Highlights included an inspiring performance by One Drum Africa, whose traditional beats brought everyone to their feet, and spoken word poetry celebrating Black heritage.

Attendees enjoyed delicious traditional foods, fun inflatables, and a vibrant array of community stalls, showcasing local artisans and young entrepreneurs. Among the popular attractions were African-themed mask-making in our arts and crafts room, drumming workshops in our music studio, and a ‘Climb Kilimanjaro’ challenge in our climbing wall area.

Visitors also delighted in family-friendly activities, including classic movies celebrating Black heritage, and indulged in a variety of authentic treats like rice and peas, fish cakes, plantain, and family favorites such as popcorn and candyfloss.

Reflecting on the importance of Black History Month, one Unitas Youth Zone worker said: “To me, Black History Month means that I get to celebrate and recognise my culture without being discouraged by my background or others. It’s amazing to help support Black culture and make people feel heard and powerful.”

In the afternoon, we were also proud to partner with Black in White and host the ‘Poetry Competition 2024 Awards and Book Launch’. Lead by Charlotte Shyllon of Black in White, the event featured an open-mic session, a book launch, live music, and special guest; the mayor of Barnet’s office, further enriching the day’s celebration.

Unitas is a state-of-the-art, 25,000 square foot Youth Zone facility that provides young people aged 8-19 (or up to 25 with additional needs) access to a wide range of activities to along with the opportunity to try new things, meet new friends and gain new experiences in an inspiring space.
