Barnet Conservatives have hailed the successful retention of Golders Green ward as an “overwhelming endorsement” of the party.

Tory candidate Peter Zinkin won Thursday’s by-election with 66.8% of the vote, up from 64.5% at the 2022 local election less than one year ago.

The poll had been triggered after the death of long-serving councillor Melvin Cohen on 13th December. First elected to represent Golders Green ward in 1982, Melvin twice served as mayor of the borough and was also cabinet member for planning from 2004 to 2010.

Following the news that the Golders Green seat had been successfully retained, Conservative group leader Dan Thomas said: “Peter’s victory is an overwhelming local endorsement of the Conservative Party. He ran a positive campaign focusing on local issues.

“Barnet Labour’s Ulez policy and proposed council tax hike was deeply unpopular on the doorstep. The result proves the national opinion polls should be taken with a large pinch of salt.’’

Cllr Zinkin will now represent Golders Green alongside his Conservative colleague Dean Cohen.
