Firefighters were called to a fire at a house on The Bishops Avenue in East Finchley this morning.

There was significant damage to the large, detached property but no reports of any injuries. London Fire Brigade was called at 3.45am and the fire was under control at 6am, with six fire engines and 40 firefighters attending the scene. The roof, first floor and ground floor were destroyed by the blaze.

Station Commander Rob Hazzard, who was at the scene, said: “The property is believed to be disused and empty at the time of the fire, so fortunately there were no reports of any injuries.

“Firefighters were faced with a significant fire on arrival which involved the whole of this large building.

“Crews worked hard to tackle the blaze and bring it under control.

“Part of the road is likely to be closed throughout the morning as crews remain on scene damping down, so we would advise motorists to avoid the area where possible.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
