Several graves at St Mary’s Church, the oldest parish Church in Hendon and the London Borough of Barnet were vandalised last week. The churchyard, which could date back to Anglo-Saxon England, is a refuge for plants and wildlife and is named as a Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation. It is also of historical importance: containing the graves of service personnel from the Commonwealth who fought in World War I and World War II.

The church’s vicar explained that the local community has already responded to the vandalism by laying flowers over the graves.

Dr Julie Gittoes said:

“The community is shocked and saddened by the damage caused to a number of graves in St Mary’s churchyard. A member of the congregation suggested placing flowers at the damaged graves as a sign of respect and care. Many have shared in this heartwarming gesture. We are grateful for the support of the wider community – including council members and other faith leaders.

The police have been informed.”
