Barnet Council has launched a campaign urging residents to “go lean, go green, go bean!” by adding more beans and pulses to their diet.

The campaign website tells residents “There are so many varieties of beans, peas and lentils that can be incorporated into our diets, but many of us are unaware of their huge health benefits, how they help us reduce our carbon footprints and how they can make us stay full for longer, how they save us money and just how plain mouthwateringly tasty a bean can be!”

According to the campaign, over 40% of the UK never eats a single bean or lentil.

Beans, lentils and peas are some of the few foods to be classed as both a vegetable and a protein. Their protein content helps build and maintain healthy muscles, bones and skin, are cheaper than other protein equivalents and are better for the environment.

The  Go Lean, Go Green, Go Bean website includes recipes, tips, bean and lentil facts and links to upcoming food events in the borough.
